This app provides prototype audio descriptions from various National Park Service sites across the United States, offering an acoustic alternative to their paper brochures. It has been specifically designed for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, print dyslexic, or prefer auditory learning.
Ensuring equal access to public discourse regarding public resources is a fundamental principle of this research project conducted by the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH). The project aims to cater to diverse audiences and operates under the principles of Universal Design.
We are proud to have the support and sponsorship of reputable institutions and organizations including the University of Hawaii, the National Park Service, Google, the American Council of the Blind, and the Hawaii-Pacific Islands Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit.
The project owes its success to the dedicated efforts of various core contributors, including Brett Oppegaard (Principal Investigator, UH), Megan Conway (Co-Principal Investigator, UH), Thomas Conway (Co-Principal Investigator, UH), Michele Hartley (Media Accessibility Coordinator, NPS), Joe Oppegaard (Chief Technology Officer, Montana Banana), Philipp Jordan (Research Assistant, UH), Tuyet Hayes (Research Assistant, UH), Sajja Koirala (Research Assistant, UH), and Terence Rose (Research Assistant, UH).
